Pasquale’s Time is a two-person shop on Shirley Avenue in Euclid. Alfred Pasquale at the bench, and his aunt Rosa at the counter three days a week.
Three generations, one bench, sixty-eight years on the same street
Alfredo Pasquale left Bari in 1951 with a roll of tools and a job waiting at a factory in Cleveland. He hated the factory. By 1958 he had a storefront on Shirley Avenue with his name in the window and a sign in two languages, because half the neighborhood was Italian and the other half was not sure about him yet.
My father Vincent took over in 1986. He was the one who added the jewelry counter, mostly because people kept asking and he got tired of sending them to Lakeshore.
I started sweeping the floor at eleven and sitting at the bench at nineteen. Vincent handed me the keys in 2009 and still comes in on Saturdays to tell me I am doing it wrong.
